On October 22, 1989, a group of women gathered at the Chicano Native American Cultural Center to form an organization to provide social and academic support to Latina women and women of all cultures at the University of Iowa. Later, the five founding mothers, Gloria Cuevas, Julieta Miller, Danelle Riojas, Maria Pineda, and Guadalupe Temiquel broke the barriers of traditional sororities by creating a sorority for women of all cultural backgrounds. After much work and dedication, the Panhellenic Council at the University of Iowa recognized Sigma Lambda Gamma as a sorority on April 9, 1990.
